Make sure you are using the latest drivers for your drive.

did the update driver and it say si am using the latest drive available

Did it read them fine before the format and reinstall of Windows?

You shouldn't have to upgrade the firmware in the drive if it worked in the past. Also, you say that sometimes it reads them, sometimes it doesn't. Does it stop reading the "same" disc that it read before?

OK, did you change your media brand (Imation, Verbatim, Memorex, etc)?

It doesn't make sense that it would "sometimes" read the disc except for three reasons:

1) the quality of the disc is poor, or not good enough to work 100% of the time

2) the way the disc was burned has changed (for example, you are burning at higher speeds, using a different software program to make the discs, making a different kind of disc such as ISO or UDF, etc)

3) the drive itself is failing or needs cleaned (recommended that you steer clear of disc cleaners, and instead, use a can of compressed air to blow out the inside of the drive with caution)

using the same brand of discs except i did buy them from tigerconnect this time as the store i usually buy from has not had a sale on them for awhile

as far as software
i did install nero 7 and got this problem so i uninstalled and then used nero clean up
and then upgraded my nero6.0 ultra edition to the newest version of it

i alos did run a disc cleaner thru it
thought it couldn't hurt lol
i am wondering if when the guy who put my newer storage harddrive back in after recovering data from it
if he changed some settings in bios or something
just darn near brain dead trying to figure this out

i uninstalled the drive and then rebooted and let windows re-detect it
same thing...read some..then didn't read them when put back in

re-installed powerdvd

reinstalled nero
few other things i can't remember at the moment

But here's the kicker....it "sometimes" reads the disc.

Because that's true, it shouldn't be a Windows registry setting or problem with your software you have installed.

Sorry, but it sounds to me like a hardware issue with the drive. You can try it in another PC as a test, or see if it has problems from a DOS prompt (use a 98SE boot disk - Either test will eliminate Windows from being the issue.

I suggest:

1.) that you DL the CLEANPACK from NERO website, and run the REGISTRYCHECKER...

or

2.) START, RUN, type in Regedit... search for the following KEY and delete it:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"

Without the quotes of course...

then exit the RegEdit and go to the 'device mangler' and uninstall all CD-ROM's, DVD's, and CD-RW's...
REBOOT...

let windows reinstall the drives...

This can happen when the Upper and Lowerfilters are damaged...

anyway, it will not damage your OS so it will not hurt to try...

I also suggest that you install the ASPI LAYERS from Adaptec aswell, even though NERO installs it's own, some softwares out there need or use them... current version is 4.72, I believe...

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

The only software programs that need the ASPI layer are the ones that weren't designed for Windows 2000 or XP. Both of these OS's use SPTI, ASPI's replacement by Microsoft. So unless you have legacy software that predates the year 2000, the ASPI layer won't make much difference.

Again, I would try the bootdisk suggestion or installing the drive in another PC to help isolate Windows as the problem, if that's the case...
