Hi I have a cd rom
It was working just fine when had windows 2000
Now i installed windows XP and now i dont see the cd rom icon in my computer. I checked in devie manager, its showing an exclamation mark yellow sign, which means it is not working.
it showing the following statement in device manager
""Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)""

what could have happened? do i need new drivers
It is LG CD-RW CED8080B driver.
Thanks

rizunb,

If you have not made any hardware changes(i.e.) re-ccabled or otherwise; XP should have the correct driver for this device.

Start in safe mode
open control panel
open system/device mgr/devices
remove the cd rom drive entry
close and re-boot
XP should then report that it has found new hardware
and will re-install the device

If this works great----if you still get the exclamation mark in the device mgr check the jumpering and device position on the cable cable to insure it is correct.
last plug on ide is the master---middle plug is secondary(slave)---first plug to the mobo.

HD should be master---rom drive (if on same cable) should be slave. If on another cable check position (second ide same as first) for correct jumper to cable position settings.

If you have to correct this repeat the safe mode routine.

Hope this corrects the problem.

ok, This is what i did
i uninstalled the device driver in safe mode
and restarted the computer, xp detected new hardware and installed the device, but I see that exclamation mark again.

In the BIOS, i checked, my hd is on master and cdrom is on secondary. there is "none" on slaves (both)

any other ideas??. Thing is i didnt touch the cpu, so how could the cables get messed up.

May be windows xp just doesnt have the write driver ..

Now its giving me this error in device manager
before it was different

umm, i think I have messed it up

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

You could try system restore, goback as far as you can, see if that helps you any.
If it were me, i would shut down, completely disconnect the cdrom, then run system restore as far back as possible.
After that, shut down, re-install cdrom and boot up.

You do have the "long" section plug of the IDE cable to the motherboard? XP can be particular. You could also try the CD on the secondary IDE port, with a 40 wire cable. Some Optical drives like 40 - some like 80.

@rizunb - this is a Upper and Lower Filter problem within the Registry... check this FAQ out to solve the problem...

faq602-5358

and report back if it worked or not...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

In the interest of whats best for rizunb, can i suggest that he do what micker377 suggested first, then do what
BadBigBen has suggested after that, as the cable has to be on right first of all and micker377 is also very correct in saying that sometimes optical drives dont like the thinner, 80 wire ide cable, plus the fact that the blue end must be on the motherboard and the master drive must be on the end of the cable, and the slave drive in the middle. If you have a manual for the optical drive, check and see which ide cable they suggest.

Then do what BadBigBen has suggested.
Does that make sense?

Hi
I am trying to delete that registry mentioned above
but its not letting me do that
I have set the proper rights. it says "CANNOT DELETE THE REGISTRY, ERROR WITH DELETING KEY"

:(

@rizunb - do you have Admin Rights? or you may have not set the permissions correctly there... maybe someone else with a bit more knowledge on the Registry Permissions may be able to help you there...
