I have a custom-built PC running Win2K with a generic 48x ATAPI CD-ROM (I forget the exact brand). The other day, I tried to use the drive to listen to a copy-protected CD that, at the time, I didn't know was such (the case wasn't labeled as being copy-protected). It's the type with the outer track of garbage data that's notorious for destroying iMacs.
Anyway, after I tried and failed to listen to the CD, I got it to eject, and tried using a data CD, as well as other non-copy-protected audio CDs. The drive could not read any of them. It makes sounds like the drive motor is surging, trying to get up to speed (it usually spins right up). To eject the discs, I have to hold the eject button for a few seconds and then wait for up to a minute for the tray to finally eject.
I've tried rebooting, and completely powering the system off. Neither restores the drive's functionality. Has anyone else encountered this, and can offer suggestions (aside from replacing the drive)?
