Hi there,

I'm trying to install a CD-ROM for a friend but am encountering some difficulty.

The computer I'm installing it on is an older computer. I've setup the CDROM as a master on a free IDE port but can't get the stupid thing to register in the BIOS.

I enter the setup but I don't see any reference to the CDROM. Any ideas?

P.S - the CDROM says that it's a E-DIE/ATAPI interface? Is it possible that my older computer doesnt recognize it?

BIOSs on older machines sometimes don't recognise CD-ROM drives. However, it may well show up on the POST summary screen as the PC boots up.

Depending upon what operating system you're using, you might need to install a DOS driver for it - I'm guessing you might have WIN95 or 98 perhaps...?

I'm using Win2000.

Would this be a secondary drive or something? It didnt come with any disks or drivers...

Ok, forget the DOS driver for a W2K installation...

1) Have you checked ANFPS26's suggestion?

2) Watch the POST summary screen which details memory, FDD, HDD installed etc, and CPU type. It will also usually show if a CD or DVD is attached. You can usually hit the <Pause> key if it whizzes by too quickly and starts to load Windows!

3) Does your BIOS have an "Autodetect" feature for the drives? If yes, try actioning it.

4) Does the CD tray open when the button is pushed in?

5) Recheck the IDE cable you're using, and ensure it's the correct way round? Occasionally on some older motherboards there's no plastic surrounding the IDE header pins, so it's possible to push the connector on with one set of pins offset.

6) Is this a brand new CD? Do you know if it works ok? Can you test it on another PC to verify it?

You said "Would this be a secondary drive or something?" I'd imagine your hard disk is set up as the Master drive on the Primary IDE interface, and this CD-ROM will also be a Master but on the Secondary IDE interface.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help guys,

It turned out that the jumper was set to Slave...Dumb mistake.
