CD rom drives Disconnect checked or unchecked.

Can anyone tell me what the disconnect check box does in the device manager cd rom drive properties. It is usually checked on default. What about sync data transfer. Also I know I have a dma drive (DVD) but I cannot check the box when windows reboots it just un checks it. regardless should disconnect be checked or unchecked?.
