Since I went to XP PRO from Vista Home, my internal cd-rom drive is not working properly. All looks normal in Device Manager. I can write to a CD using the wizard, but cannot do anything with the CD after that. The CD is readable on an external drive. When I try to explore the internal drive, it just ramps up the sound, but doesn't show anything. The drive is DVD-RW 16X PBSD DH16AYH. The hardware is Compaq Presario SR2150NX Desktop PC running XP PRO SP2. Any ideas would be appreciated. Don't know a lot. Willing to learn.

Thanks,

1. The drive could be fried
2. The filter drivers are corrupted:

If you could test the drive on another machine that would eliminate #1 as a possibility. Best of luck.

Have you tried booting in safe mode? I had a weird thing on a Toshiba Notebook with dvdrw drive that wouldn't read drives all of a sudden. Then I found the software that was messing with it, disabled it at startup, and no more issues. I don't remember what the exact program was, but at least you could try safe mode, and then test from there.

I took your suggestion and rebooted into safe mode. The drive is fully operational in safe mode, so there has to be a part of full-blown windows that is blocking the use of the drive. Any suggestions on how to detect what is doing this ?

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks for the suggestion. I ran the executable and it logged the following:

I would uncheck this one from your startup items:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

Unless you use Real Player all the time, and want it checking for updates. I doubt that will fix the particular issue, but it's worth changing anyway.

--------
Also, you could try unchecking this startup item, if it is a startup item:
C:\Program Files\USB TV\EM28XX\BDARemote.exe

I've not spent much time looking at HJT logs, but I do believe this is not a very common file. It could be buggy. If that doesn't fix it, and it actually stops something you WANT, then you can always recheck it.

---------

To make the changes, I'm talking about, do this:
Start Menu - >Run -> type "msconfig" -> <Enter>
On System Configuration Utility, "Startup" tab, you'll see the entries "realsched" and "BDARemote" most likely listed in the left hand column.

----------

For each change, make the change, hit "OK" button under the System Configuration Utility, and restart your computer. When your computer comes back up, you'll get a message box. You can just check "don't show me this again", and see if your drive is working correctly. If you have the same problem, then it isn't one of these startup items.

----------

Another guess (though I believe it was not the case on my laptop) is that it could be something with Norton. It looks like Norton 360 has a whole heap of different things running on your machine.

----------

Another possibility is the ccc.exe program by ATI. If I'm correct, that's the Catalyst Control Center by ATI. I know that software is sometimes buggy, and causes issues on some computers, at least. If nothing else, it's a resource hog for what it does. You could try disabling that startup item as well.

KJV1611,
Thanks for your suggestions. I will give them a try when I get home later on tonight. Real Player was installed just last week Friday, so I might leave that for now as the problem existed before that. I have been eyeing the BDARemote startup as it doesn't seem like it would be necessary for the operation of XP, so I will change that config. As far as Norton 360, it is being used in limited form right now as the email scanning and spam handling will not work within 360 while the ports assigned to the email client are SSL ports. The change to SSL ports is a mandate from my ISP which is AT&T. They want to handle spam at the server level as much as possible, but they also have you activate something called SpamGuard which is supposed to handle spam. Does ok, but I prefer to handle through Norton at the client level. That way I can check the spam folder for anything in there which is or is not spam, and correct the issue there. Yes, CCC is the Catalyst Control Center. I was afraid that I had applied too many drivers given to me by ATI support, one of which was interfering with the operation of the CD-ROM drive. I will do one at a time and inform of the results. Thanks for all the assistance.

Also, as a side note, I think the BDARemote sounds more like something that could be included with a t.v. card. If your ATI card is an All-In-Wonder card, for instance, it might have something to do with the t.v. tuner portion.

Either way, let us know if any of those fix the issue.

First, thanks again for your assistance. I appreciate it. I went through MSCONFIG and turned off one-at-a-time most of the items in the startup area including CCC, Norton. About the only thing not done was Java ( I think it is jusched.exe ). Nothing turned off had any effect. The problem remains. So, I am checking with the retailer to see if I can download drivers for the device from their site without having to take it to Geek Squad. Interesting little problem. I would like to know if anyone knows of any other diagnostic techniques or software to check out this problem.

Thanks again KJV1611.

Hmm, well there are yet other places to look.

In MSCONFIG, you can also look at the services tab. When you boot in safe mode, all those are not loaded, just like the "startup" items.

Also, to look in more detail in what services actually loads automatically when you start Windows, you can look at the services window. Quickest way to get there, I think, is this way:

Start Menu
-> Run
-> Type "services.msc" in the box, and hit <Enter>
->A new window will pop up listing the services installed on your PC.

You can sort them by Name, description, startup type, or log on as (I believe those are the default fields to show).

If you sort by "status", you can see which services are actually running on your pc. If it wasn't a "startup" item, then it is very possibly something in the services list.

To turn them off, you can do so from msconfig or the services window.

In MSCONFIG, you simply uncheck an item, and it will not load the next time you restart.

In the Services window, you can right-click on the one you want to stop, and choose "stop" - or double-click on the item to open it, hit the "stop" button. This will actually stop the service from running "right now". It's a good way to test to see if one is causing the problem. If you find one IS causing the problem this way, then you can set the "startup type" to disabled - You'll need to have the individual service opened to change it's startup type.

Also, one last - easier - place to look is the "startup" folder under Start -> All Programs. Usually, if not always, the item(s) listed there will also be listed in msconfig-startup, so it may not be worth looking at. I usually look there anyway.

Ok, thanks again. I checked in the Startup folder, which is where BDARemote was located. Nothing else in there, but a good thought. I will check in a couple of hours at home for the services tab of MSCONFIG and the services.msc window. I took a look at the services.msc window on my work network, and it is quite the list ! I can't possibly have as much on my PC, but I will see. Update later.

You'd be surprised how much is on your personal computer. [wink] I doubt there are many more on your work computer.

I would uninstall the following:

RealPlayer
Roxio \
[tab][tab] \ if you have either
Nero /

Then review this thread to remove the Upper and Lower Filter keys in the registry (be sure to reboot afterwards):
thread602-1458737

Also, if you use any kind of virtual drive program like Alcohol 120%, get rid of it. I've seen this one cause the most problems in the past. Once you get the CD to read again, then work on getting your CD/DVD burning app(s) reinstalled.
