I have a toshiba laptop satellite 4060cdt . My cdrom drive appears under MY COMPUTER - when I click on it I get the Message E:\is not accessible. THe device is not ready.

I can do an EJECT from the properties menu and it ejects the cd.

When I close the door the light goes on and trys to read but nothing.

Everythin looks ok in device mangager also ??
says drivers are working properly
Sound is not working -- thsi is the tip off I gues that it may be a driver ????

THANKS

Yea, I've tried several cd's, new ,old, and does the same thing. Thanks.

Then it probebly a bad reader on the CDROM. If thats the case you will have to contact Toshiba to get a new CD Drive. James Collins

Yea, well they want $35.00 just to talk to them. I have another laptop here and I'd like to swap them out but it doesn't look like they (the laptops)are to user friendly on the disassembly side .

Could the lens be dirty --- i dont know even where to clean it if it is. Its worth a shot- the funny thing is that this cd-rom hasn't been used that much. Probably 20 times if that much.

Thanks.

Could be dirty. You can buy CDROM cleaning kits at Walmart for 5 bucks (If you have a Walmart). Is this a newr Laptop? If it is is it under warranty? James Collins

Heck, save the $5. Take a q-tip and some isopropyl (Rubbing) alocohol and give the lense the lightest cleaning possible. Isopropyl alcohol evaporates with no residue, and q-tip generally leave no cotton, so if it's a dirt issue that should fix it.

The other possibility is an armiture issue. If it's that, you're screwed...
