My son has a Compaq 5315KS computer which is having the following problems. 1) the cd r/w does not work (device manager say device is functioning)( already uninstall and re-installed driver). 2 Search and Destory stops functioning when it comes across a lot of "cool cool or cool errors. Are these problem related, and is there a way of fixing them ?

The problems are probably not related.

Coolwebsearch is a nasty hijacker. Try Cwshredder ( first. If this doesn't fix it search the -Virus/Spyware forum or post again there.

Some more details about the drive might be helpful, eg does it not work at all, does it spin...?

windows identifes the cd r/w drive as a Phlip CDD4851. Get windows error stating that windows can not read from this disc, the disc is not formatted. The disc is a music cd. The light on the front of the drive turns red when the disc is inserted. sounds like there is some movement inside, when I eject the disc it is still spinning.Still working on the Hijack problem.

Thanks for the update on the specs/operation of the CD. Usually there is either a bad CD Or a bad laser, I have had little luck with cleaning the head or blowing out the CD tray with air, but they are worth a shot if you own a CD cleaner...if not I'd say save the $10 for the cleaner and put it towards a new $25 CD-RW. I have seen many people spending hours of valuable time on this cheap part.

There are Trojans and malware that affect CD drives' operation too, so my first step would be to sterilize that machine. Get Adaware, spyware blaster, AVG's free Anti-spyware and run them all. Cool is notorious for having roots like Banyan trees, as a first or last measure (depending on your level of expertise) you can scan with HijackThis , a free download, then post the report either on their forum or here. Cleaning the machine should be the #1 priority, even if it means a clean format and recovery. Just make sure that bug's not in your backups!

Best of luck.

Tony
