my neice is running a P4 3ghz 512MB machine. she has had OS problems ever since she bought PC. Technical support have been no use whatsoever so she asked me reinstall win xp for her (no recovery disc). Have recreated partion on disc and reformatted. Have been able to reinstall win xp and get on internet (dialup). When I try and install software from CDROM and then open my computer the whole system seems to hang for a few minutes and will normally need to be rebooted. If I open my computer with no disc in CD drive everything appears fine. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this???????

Did you have any problems installing XP? (eg, did the CD drive have problems reading the install disk at all)

Is it all CDs that you put in the drive that cause this problem?

Have you got another CD/DVD drive you could try in the machine to see if that's the problem?

The fact you say there have been problems since your niece bought the machine & you still have problems after reinstall suggests a hardware problem - not necessarily the CD drive, but worth checking. If its not the problem, could be any other hardware (RAM is common culprit, and easy to check - if > 1 stick memory, try each on its own. Otherwise run a memory checker - eg, - but if machine is still in warranty I'd consider trying to get it replaced with new one or get the supplier to sort the problem.
