I have a very perplexing problem. My computer will only recognize the cd rom from dos. It will not work from windows
Running win95 on a compaq4834.Tried everything any and all responses will be greatly appreciated!!

first thing is to check for virus's, second goto device manager and see if it has cdrom drives showing, you may want to go into safe mode and remove all cdrom devices then restart and see if windows will put them back

In windows 95 you had to install CDROM drivers manually. Try using Mitsumi standard CDROM drivers. Mitsumi makes generic CDROM's. I think their install software is just about automatic. You may need to add some other system files as drivers for the CDROM to work. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

you dont have to install cdrom drives manually in 95 unless it was a propietary cdrom running of a ide controller from the soundcard

Open regedit, and do a search for "noide".
Delete any references found.
Restart. Cheers,
Jim

Look in Device Manager and see if it is recognising your chipset. If it is not then it will not see the CD drive. It should say something like "Intel 82100 PCI Bridge" not a generic listing. If it does not go to the web and get the drivers for it. Either the Intel INF for chipsets, or the VIA 4in1 Drivers.

WIN95 does not recognise your chipset because it is newer than the OS. Obviously.

You seriously should upgrade that OS.
