cd/dvd drive invisible under win xp pro 1

Hi all,

This is not the first time that it happens to me but i still haven't found the exact cause of this problem ...
I bought a ide dvd writer 2 weeks ago with a ide->usb2 converter. I connected it to my laptop. The first time id dit it and also in the following days i had no problem. I could even write a dvd that i had on hand. while waiting for cheap dvds, i stopped using it ... Today, I wanted to use it and i see while reconnecting the usb cable that the writer is invisible in win explorer, in the device manager, in the software like aida32, Everest, ... Bref So : completely invisible ... I've installed the sp1 and all the updates avalaible for win xp but no change !
I already had this problem with the internal cd drive of my laptop and I could cope with it (i disabled the acpi service of xp) but without really understanding what's really happening in there !
As it happened twice with two different drives but each time under xp pro, i feel xp is responsible ... But maybe i missed something ??!

If someone already had this problem and solved it or simply if someone can give me a hint it would be a great help !

First, please leave ACPI active if you have it in hardware. It is your friend, not your enemy.

Second, there are various reasons why a removable drive becomes "invisible."

But first question, did you use TweakUI from Microsoft to "Hide" any drive letters?

I don't understand exactly what acpi means. I think I removed the service after my problems with my internal cd drive (I found in forums on internet that it could be the problem and after it worked and i had no problem at all with my internal drive after that).
So I don't understand your sentence "leave acpi active if you have it in hardware" ?
I tried to remove the keys as explained in the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 314060 but i couldn't (error while deleting key ... cannot delete).
Also i didn't tweak ui to hide drive letters. Maybe a virus ?? The drive is not found in nero either ...
I'm having a look a the homework while waiting for your answer.

Sorry ! It was not acpi but Imapi service that i disabled ...

ACPI= Advanced Configuration and Power Interface.

You want this enabled. It is unlikely you really disabled it, as it is quite a feat under Device Manager to do so.

For the upper and lower registry filter keys in the registry:

. logon as administrator
. Use Safe Mode if you have to

There should not be a permissions issue for the Administrator to make the registry change.

Do not rule out a cable connection, a faulty cable, or a misconfigured jumper setting.

yep you're right : i don't even know how i could turn all the services of acpi in once ! It was just an acronym mistake !
For the registry changes, I know I shouldn't have problems because I'm member of admninistrators group but i still have some ... Maybe this key is being used somewhere else but I stopped all applications before ??? I'll retry that after booting...
Concerning the cable connection or faulty cable I don't think so : the cables didn't move since it worked and I tried several times to replug but no change. The jumper didn't move either since the last use...

I've explored the registry and found the key hkey_local_machine\system\mounteddevices. Under that, there is still the key \dosdevice\h: . That letter was the one assigned to my dvd drive when it was working. I'll try to delete the 2 keys after backing up reboot and test... will see...

This is what I wanted as a starting point:

. Start, Run, regedit
. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

Reboot.

It works !
Yesterday, before going to sleep I removed the keys you mentionned (actually just the LowerFilters key as the UpperFilters key was not there). Then I rebooted but it still didn't work. So I turned the laptop and the drive off ... This morning I turned all on (first laptop then the drive) and now it works ! Strange isn't it ? :S
I have the feeling the problem will come back but know on, it's working.
