CD drives disappear?

I have a Dell 4100 with a dell CD-ROM and a aftermarket CD-RW. If the puter is booted up without a CD Rom in the drive, it can see both drives, but cannot see a CD in either drive. If booted with a CD Rom in the Rom drive, it can see a disk in either.

I have a Dell 4500. Same story.

What's this all about?????

There were several Dell advisories about BIOS issues with the 41xx series and CD Rom drives.

Begin by updating if appropriate the BIOS on both machines.
