Cd Drive Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Please be gentle, as I am not a Mac User, however a colleague is having problems with their Cd drive on their Imac, I am not sure on the specifics, however they have asked me to have a look, could anyone tell me the basic steps involved in troubleshooting a faulty/problem Cd drive on a Mac computer,In other words where or how do I start?
Apologies for not having more specific information on the fault.
this would be a great help as I have to have a look at it tomorrow, Please help if you can

I would search the Apple.com Knowledge Base site for iMac CD and whatever keyword that its symptom seems to be...
