Hi! Here's the details of my situation:

1)Upgrade a 98SE machine with an ECS K7S5A mobo / Athlon 1.3 Ghz chip, went from 256 PC133 to 512MB. Unit has an Acer CD-RW and a basic 52X cd rom. XP Pro clean install went perfect as can be. Owner did state he had CD-ROM problems with it before hand.

2)The CD drives show up fine at the post, in my computer, and device manager. No problems there. In fact, I used the 52X for the XP Pro install, all OK.

3)I put a CD-ROM install disk (for whatever, it doesn't matter) and the drive fires up, you see the "cd symbol" next to the mouse pointer, and nothing happens. I go to my computer and NOW....the cd-rw shows up as just a cdrom. I double click the drive, no contents. I right click and eject the drive, it shows back up immediately as a CD-RW.

So with that, I ensured the jumpers were correct (master / slave), check the connections, all OK.

I tried one drive at a time, same result. Tried a new DVD Burner, same result

Changed out the IDE cables (even went down to a 33X transer cable) to no avail, and swaped the IDE cables for IDE 1 and 2, still same result. Tried different RAM too.

Reset the bios...same result. Never seen this one before. The computer otherwise *runs like a champ* and happens on both IDE channels, so I don't *think* it's a mobo issue.

Any ideas? Your time and efforts are always greatly appreciated! Thanks!

sounds more like a plug and play problem. Visit the acer website and see if they have any information about that CD-RW drive and any known issues with XP.
