On my Windows 98 I deleted something from "program files" folder that is in the c drive. Since then I don't see an icon for this drive in "my computer", and I cannot open the drive or use it. It looks like the CPU doesn't know the CD drive exists. What to do?

Thanks for any help, Ilan.

Open the device manager and see if its in there. If there is a yellow question mark next to it you probably need to install some drivers for it (which is unusual since they are generic drivers contained in windows). If that dosen't work I would start up in Safe Mode, go to the device manager and remove the drive there. Shut down completely and then reboot. Let windows search for the "new hardware" and it should install it

dumdum (Visitor), thanks for your reply. I'll try giving you a few clues that might help.

1) When right clicking on "my computer" and choosing "device manager", there is no "cd-rom" driver at all.

2) When choosing Programs->accessories->entertainment->CD player. I get the message: "there is no cd-rom player attached to this computer. cd player cannot start."

3) When opening "my computer", there is no icon or a question mark for the cd-rom driver.

4) By pressing the cd-rom button, it doesn't open or respond. Its light is off.

Any idea what to do?

it sounds like you cd drive is not reciving any power. check this by opening the coputer, locating the cd drive and remove the power cable and then install the power cable again. do this with the data cable aswell.
