hi friends,
i have a 48x infra red cdrom drive. most of the times when i try to copy anything from the cd, nothing seems to progess in the progress bar, and the expected time keeps increasing for hours together, and the same happens while installing any software directly from the cdrom.

the cdrom led and the hard disk led glow in sync and go off in sync, and while the led glows the cdrom spins with lot of noise, it spins like turbo charged engine.

is there a problem with my cdrom or with any other hardware?

Make sure that all of the CD-ROM drive's cables are securely connected.
If that's ok, then clean its lens either with a commercial cleaning kit(Radio shack), or with some high purity alcohol(91% or higher) and a Q-Tip.
If no luck, then remove it from Device Manager, restart the computer, and let Windows recognize it and reinstall its drivers.
If that does not work, then try a different IDE cable.
If still no good, then either install it on IDE 1 or on a different system. If the same thing happens, then the drive may be bad.

i found that my cdrom is on ide2 as slave, and my hard disk on ide1 as primary, will that be a problem?

That's how they're normally configured.

If your cd is the only drive on ide2 then it should be set to master as it is the only device on that ide channel.
