CD Controller is not working!

I had my CD-R working properlly before I was infected with some kind of viruses. After scanning the HD with Norton, I had to delete lots of infected files. After that, I guess, my CD-R didnt work again. Its Mitsumi CR-48XATE. I cant setup the CD Controller anymore. I also tried to update it, but it wont work.
When I put a cd into my CD-R, what happens is that everything freezes and then I recieve a warning in a totally blue screen saying that either I have to shut down the pc or the Explorer wont work anymore. I tried to use my old CD-Rom, and it works.
Can anyone help me out here? I really need to have my CD-R back.

You should Un-install the program & Re-istall it fresh if you have the proram... If I cannot Blow It Up... Noone Can!!

It sounds like the the driver files are corrupt and you need to reload them. Try using a windows 98 boot diskette and boot to an a prompt and make sure you choose the option to load the cdrom drivers. Then change the a prompt to the cdrom drive letter (it will tell you, it's usually D) and put a cd in the drive. Type in dir at the prompt and it should give you a directory of all that is on that cd. That is how you can tell if it is a windows issue or a hardware problem. You could go into safe mode and then the control panel and take out any duplicates under cdroms. Do you have the cdrom driver cd?? If not just go on the web I'm sure you can get it there.

Cindy1, I think driver files are corrupt. would you please say more about how I can load cdrom driver or how to update driver files?
At first I thought its a hardware problem, so I had my cdrom changed to a new one. but its not working still. So I am sure its just a windows issue.
In System Properties, under CD-ROM controllers I have the cd-controller but its marked with a yellow ark which means its not working properly.
It says: "This device is either not present, not working, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10) Try updating the device drivers for this device." Any thoughts?

Assuming you have Windows 9x, try this:

1. Restart computer into safe mode: hold F8 while starting Windows and choose Safe mode from the list,
2. Go to Device manager and remove all CD-ROMs, Hard disks and IDE controllers that you have.
3. Restart Windows normally (not in Safe mode). It should re-detect all devices present in the PC. Have your Windows CD ready. If you see a message that the file exists, choose overwrite.

This way, all the Windows drivers will be copied from the original.

Now, de-install the application for recording CDs and install it again.

This should fix the problem.

Yes I am running WIN98SE, and I did what you said but it didnt work out. I mean CD Controller is still marked and not working.
The thing is that I dont know where I should find its files. while trying to update or setup a cd controller, three diffrent "Mitsumi CD-ROM Controller with Double Speed Drive" can be found, but none of them works.
By the way I dont think I mentioned before that I am not sure if its because of cd controller or not, but Its definitely not a hardware problem. now what?

After you remove all 'Hard Disk Controllers' and all 'CD controllers' under 'safe mode', Windows will install the drives automaticaly after restart. You should not install any 'cd controller' manually. This driver you tried to install will not work anyway, because it was used for old CD-ROMs about 7-8 years ago, which used to connect to a separate controller or a Sound Blaster. You have an IDE drive, which connects to a IDE - Hard Disk Controller.

Since you had problems with a virus, possibly some windows files are damaged/missing. You should reinstall windows 98 OVER the currently installed one (just start SETUP.EXE from the CD) and choose to overwrite any changed files. If this does not help, than you should do a full format and reinstallation of your PC.

Also, try connecting the device alone as Master on the secondary IDE channel and check BIOS settings.

If possible, test the drive on another PC.
