I have an ancient RCD (pinnacle Micro) CD burner. I can create CDs under win95, but the linux commands (cdrecord and cdwrite) as well as the CDRoast program only produce expensive coasters. The device is properly detected, and I can put tracks on the CD, but nothing useable can be created. (No ISO, audio etc.)
Any ideas?

Are you creating an image using mkfsiso? If so, make sure the extension is .iso. Xcdroast will use the image to create a CD. Also, the image can be mounted and a list of the files or tracks can be displayed. This will ensure that there is valid data. If It is CD to CD copying, the reader may be suspect.
