I tried copying MP3's to cd with Windows Media Player for XP. It would start converting all the files. Once all the files are converted, it would start copying them to the cd. Once the status goes to recording or copying, it would close the disk right away. The first file would say complete with a (RED EXCLAMATION). The error message saids (An invalid alignment was specifed). Then the rest of the file would say (will not fit).

I need help guys. I need to know what I need to do. I downloaded one patch already for cd burning but that didn't work.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried using a program like Nero for burning? It's just a suggestion, I don't use MS's burning software and the only thing I use Media Player for is playing mp3s. ====================================

Could it be that you're specifying more files than will fit on a CD (700 MB)? Newposter

I tried copying just 2 files approximately 12MB and I still got the same error message.

I agree with gtnavarro, use nero burning rom, it has caused me no problems, and with the mp3 plugin burns mp3s with no probs. I do not use any of XP's built in CD burning capabilities as it is very unreliable and slow, for some reason it doesn't burn to the full speed of the drive on both CD-R & CD-RW, which i think is down to it not using buffer under-run protection.

latest version of nero is 5.5.9.0 from
hope this helps

If it annoys Microsoft then it's worth doing, and doing well!!

I've tried a few different cd burning software solutions including the windows xp native solution. And today I would have to say....... Nero Nero Nero!

I have been burning mp3's (and wma's) to CD-R's and CD-RW's using Windows Media Player for a month now and have never had a single problem. The whole process is extremely quick and the resulting cd's will play on every cd player I have.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but I thought you should know that Media Player does work okay for others.

Have you checked the Microsoft Knowledge Base?

Win XP CD burning works fine for me on my Sony Vaio laptop; .wav, .mp3, data all come out fine. Newposter

I was wondering if it is my CD-RW because under device manager the model number is (CRX185E1), but it should be (CRX185A1). I've uninstalled but it would install the same driver for (CRX185E1).

Thanks to you all for a quick responsed.

Have you looked at the manufactures site for updated drivers? Have you done the latest patches and updates for Win XP? ====================================

Some similar stories here. One solution to try was a suggestion to just drag and drop the MP3 file onto a blank CDR.

"If you are using XP's built in Burning software to create audio CDs that can be played on a home stereo you do not have to use Media Player. You can simply drag and drop the mp3s onto a blank CD-R (it must be a brand new blank with no data on it) and you will be presented with an option
to create an Audio CD that can be read on any stereo. Basically the files will be converted from MP3 format to CDA format on the fly. You should also ensure that the bitrate of the MP3 is at least 128 or higher to ensure a better quality. Nero, for example, won't burn files with low bitrates and this may also be true of XP."

I had the same problem. It has to do with the speed. Media Player is set by default to burn at the highest speed your CD burn can do. Try setting it to 2x. I have no problem since.

I set up my CD-RW to 2X, but I still got the same error message.

I tried just dragging the files to the drive, it opened cd burning wizard. I chose cd for audio cd player. Then right after I click on next, it automatically opened Windows Media Player.

That's a horrible compromise I think. ====================================
