CD Burners

Hi,

We have a Sony 220E1 and an HP burner, using Nero. We don't usually have problems with this system, but lately we've been getting a long error log file. Sometimes the CDs burn without error, sometimes i get a failed message but the CD works, and others are a definite fail.

The errors seem to start when SCSI gets referred to..

and the errors continue until #47. I think if i can stop these first few the rest might get cleaned up as well..
i was thinking about updating the CD drives firmware - or is there a clue in these log files somewhere??

dunno if this helps but in my experience, this happened to me due to a failing psu. since cd burning requires more juice from the psu, it also needs a constant and reliable (preferably a much powerful) psu. but yours may be from some other reasons.

1) Does this happen when burning CDR's, CDRW's, or both?
2) What brand and speed of CD media are you using?
3) What speed are you burning at?
4) What version of Windows and Nero?
5) Is the CD burner internal or external? IDE or SCSI?
6) What model HP burner are we talking about?
7) Did the problem always exist, or did it just start recently?
8) Are you making data or music CD's?

Having the answers to these questions should shorten the length of this thread and help us provide a specific solution to your problem.

thanks for that..
1. It happens with CDRs - we don't use CDRWs
2. We've got our company logo printed over the media brand name, so will have to investigate.
3. i've tried burning at 52, 40 & 32
4. WinXP Pro with Nero 5.5
5. Internal - i think its SCSI but would have to double check
6. Oops - i'm not sure why i thought it was an HP. Its a JLMS XJ-HD165H
7. Its just started recently
8. We're making data CDs

OK. It sounds like a failing drive.

If the type of media hasn't changed, and you haven't made any major hardware/software changes to the PC recently, then I would definitely say it sounds like a hardware issue. The drive could be overheating, have dirty laser lens, or simply have worn components (does it feel like you've got your money's worth out of the drive?).

To try cleaning the drive, I don't recommend using CD cleaners that you can buy at the store, except as a last resort. Often times, they aren't sensitive enough and can do permanent damage to the lens. Instead, use a can of compressed air and short sprays into the drive with the tray open.

If that doesn't do it, either try the drive in another PC or swap a different one into this one. You could also try uninstalling/reboot/reinstalling Nero.

And just in case it's a media problem, try burning at the lower settings like 8x or 4x as a test if possible. Or try a different brand of media that you know is rated for high speeds.
