I bought a Memorex CD burner for my iMac. It won't let me open the setup.exe to download the driver because it says I don't have a default program to open it with. I am running on Mac OSX 10.3. Can anyone help me?

an "exe." is a PC setup file not to be used for Macs, does it come with a installation disk? If so it should have an OSX installer on it if not it is possible that the CD burner you've go is not compatable with Mac OS

silvress22,

Using non-apple CD burners is problematic but if you're willing to hack a bit you can probably get it to work.

I did this once a while ago, and googling around I found a web site dedicated to getting non-apple burners to work, it had instructions and so on for dozens of models.

ObviousTroll may be referring to a site like (the f.a.q. page is best), but OS 10.3.x has better support for non-Apple sourced drives.
You might like to try Patchburn - but if you don't like experimenting, your best bet might be seeing whether a commercial third-party burning application like Roxio's Toast will recognize and utilize the drive. I recall there are some shareware apps like DiscBlaze - check out versiontracker by searching for "burner"

In the last few years I have NEVER even seen an 'Apple' CD burner! What do you mean?

Kind Regards

Duncdude -

I was referring to the built-in drives. What else would you call them?

Apple definitly has OEM CD Burners. There is one in every new Mac these days. The larger point is if you want to be sure that your drive is going to work you should be able to find the Mac OS X logo on the box that the drive came in. If it is not there you are taking your chances on whether it will work or not.

Hope it's worth something.

heh. It's awfully frustrating though, pixl8r.

You see a high-speed burner for $20 or some other ridiculous price, but OS X doesn't recognize it because the drive doesn't *quite* match the model numbers OS X has in the driver matching mechanism.

Actually, what really cheeses me off is how many of these drives still don't quite meet the IDE specs - otherwise Windows wouldn't need drivers for them either.

Believe me I feel your pain. :)

There are some pretty good suggestions here for trying to get it to work though.

Agree with you fellows. If [silvress22 could ascertain the true manufacturer of the drive (since I don't believe Memorex make any drives) and its model number (does it show up in System Profiler when plugged in?), it might make it possible to use the code hack referred to by ObviousTroll and on the xlyr8 site to operate the drive in OS X.

In general, the close match between Apple software and 'approved' hardware means that whilst the 'Mac' experience may be better with the right kit, you can have quite a schlep in getting generic kit to work fully.

Luckily enough, if you have the time, reasonable understanding and an internet connection, there's usually others who are trying the same thing that either have solved the problem or can help you do so.

Happy friday, toutes!
