I have been trying to initialize new memorex cd-rw cd's to hold data. I would like to store data files and use them like I would for a zip disk.
However, the initialization goes for about 15 min and then gets data error and the cd is useless...cannot do anything with it. I have done 3 like that. It seems like I got a bad batch of cd's. Is that possible or what am I doing wrong.
I am using Roxio which came with windows xp (home)
thanks

What brand and age is the burner? I still have an HP burner in one machine that can only use 650 meg CDs. If it is a newer one, what speed is it burning at and what speed are the CDs rated for? What brand is the CD?

I am using the cd that came with my gateway computer. it is about 2 years old. I can make cds using Imation CD-RW 650MB/74Min. Memorex 700MB CD-RW 80 min is the one I am having problems....
Does that mean that I can only use 650MB???

It seems a bit new to have that limit, but, if you can write 650 and fail on 700, it sure looks like you have the limit. In my experience, the software detects and attempts to use the 700megs, but the hardware physically cannot do it. It writes out 650megs, and then fails. It took me some time and expense (upgrading software) before I figured that out. 650meg CDs do work consistently without any problem.

BTW, I think Memorex is one of the good brands. It is probably not the source of your problem, but you could check it on someone else's machine to be sure.
