Hi, I have a LG 8120b 12x8x32 burner, when I 1st got it, it
would burn at 12x no problem, but now, if I try to burn any faster than 8x, I will get buffer underrunns(no underrun protection :(), this has nothing to do with the cd's because it does it even in simulations, on 3 different programs (Nero, Clone CD, and Easy Cd Creator, all newest versions), I have a Maxtor 60gb drive(ATA 100) as my primary master, and the cd rom is by itself as the secondary master. I have a Athlon 1.33ghz system, so I cant' see the drive not keeping up with the hard drive, remember it used to work fine... Also, it does this under Windows 98, and XP Pro

Any Help would be apprecated

TASL,

You've probably installed a ton of APPS since it last worked for you. The key to preventing buffer underruns on CD Burners that don't have "Burnproof" technology, is to close as many apps as you can running in the background.

First of all, right-click My Computer and choose properties. Go to the Performance tab and make sure everything is OK (nothing using MS-DOS compatibility).

Secondly, use the msconfig utility in Win98 to disable all apps that start with Windows except Scan Registry and SYSTRAY. <Note: This is only meant as a temporary test>

Reboot after disabling everything. Do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and make sure only Explorer and Systray are running. Also disable your screen saver.

Try it again and let me know if this made a difference. If it does, then the answer to your problem is to reduce the amount of apps running at startup.

actually, the 98 system, is a clean system, it has nothing extra running, I only have it for backup purposes, just in case something doesn't work in XP, the only thing I have installed is Nero Burn, I have notcied one thing about this drive: its not using DMA, I'm not sure it even can, In XP all I can select is use DMA if available, but its using PIO, and when its reading, it uses 100% cpu usage, it is not good, is there a way to get it to use DMA?
