Ok, I am working on the CCNP Switching exam and am looking for a good Cat OS switch to use to help study for it. I know that in the past the Cat 5k switches were primarily used for that, but now the CCIE lab has switched to Cat 3550-EMI. Would the 3550 give me the same experience, and knowledge in term of labs usage to help me on the CCNP switching? Right now I also have a 2924-XL-EN along with several routers. So my question is.... seeing that in the future I want ot go for my CCIE I was wondering if it would be worth getting a Cat 3550-EMI now, but I want to make sure that it will suffice for the CCNP Switching exam.

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

2 different beasts. There are questions specific to the Cat5K and the 2900 on the CCNP exam. Also, there ALOT more 5Ks in the real world then the 3500s right now and as a CCNP, you will be expected to know them.

I would not worry about the 3550 just yet..

Alrighty, thanks fot letting me know.

For the Cat 5k, what OS is tested on the exam? I remember someone mentioning 4.5(?), but I can't remember the version. Also, if anyone could recommend what blades to get I'd appreciate it. Sorry for all the questions, I just like to get everything setup before I start the really study for it.

If I recall correctly, 4.5 is the min... as is a SupII. The reality is the test covers the Sup3 and using netflow which is pricy for the home lab. Here is what I have:

Console> (enable) show module
Mod Slot Ports Module-Type Model Sub Status
--- ---- ----- ------------------------- -------------------
1 1 2 100BaseTX Supervisor WS-X5509
2 2 12 10/100BaseTX Ethernet WS-X5213
3 3 12 10/100BaseTX Ethernet WS-X5203

In order to do etherchannel and the like, you need the X5213 or newer. The 5203 will not channel even though it is a 10/100 blade. Thats a point to remember since alot of folks offer them on ebay for cheap.. there is a reason why it's cheap.

I have 5.5 code on my SupII which is about the best I can get for it. I would much rather have the SupIII. What ever you get, make sure the Sup has the 10/100 RJ45 ports and not the fiber.. unless you have converters.
