Any suggestions on training, books, and a lab for this? I have routers and switches (layer 2), and IOS images that support VoIP. But what else would I need? Does Cisco Academy teach CCNA Voice, Gene? Thanks.

Burt

Here are two of the OFFICIAL study aids..

Burt,
Other then CCNA and CCNP they have a wireless and security program as well as web design, Linux and A+ but you find very few academies that do much more then CCNA !!

I am sure that you will see them add voice with the expansion of the CCNA specialties!

I see they dropped web design and Linux -

Cisco Networking Academy courses cover a range of topics to help students succeed based on their interests and goals:

IT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software
An introduction to computer components, laptops and portable devices, wireless connectivity, security, safety, environmental concerns, and diagnostic tools.

IT Essentials II: Network Operating Systems
A functional overview of installation, security, and back-up procedures for multiuser, multitasking network operating systems such as Linux and Windows 2000, NT, and XP.

CCNA v3.0
A foundational curriculum that covers networking design and operations.
Note: The course is being replaced by CCNA Discovery and CCNA Exploration.

CCNA Discovery
A foundational curriculum that offers a hands-on approach to learning, using interactive tools and easy-to-follow labs to help students learn the general theory needed to build networks.

CCNA Exploration
A comprehensive overview of networking; from fundamentals to advanced applications, based on a top-down approach to learning that emphasizes theoretical concepts and practical application.

CCNP v5.0
An advanced overview of complex network configurations, diagnostic tools, and troubleshooting processes.

Fundamentals of Wireless LANs
An introductory course that focuses on the design, planning, implementation, operation, and troubleshooting of wireless networks.

Network Security
An advanced technology course that teaches students how to design and implement security solutions that will reduce the risk of revenue loss and vulnerability.

Panduit Network Infrastructure Essentials
A Panduit-sponsored curriculum that blends innovative network infrastructure solutions with real-world experience.

Hope this helps!

Would I need a FXO AND an fxs card, or just one? Would a WIC-1CSU/DSU-T1 work?

Thanks guys!

What about Unified Whatever (Call Manager???)???

Burt

Hey burt, I picked up a mc3810 router off of ebay that had both an fxo and fxs interface. Think I got it for under $100.

You might want to check them out if you can find one.

Great...but what the hell is a MC3810? Is that older than the 2500's?
And what is an fxo and fxs?

Burt

lol....the mc3810 is about the same gen as the 2500's. I still think they are good routers for certain things..just not all parts.

Basically the FXO interface is phone line connection to the CO. The FXS is for an analog phone to connect.

Hey Lerdalt,
What would a good setup look like?

2950XM--FXO--[CO DEVICE HERE]--FXO--1760
| |
3550 3550

IP PHONE IP PHONE

And what would the CO device be here?

Sorry about the formatting but I have the second 3550 coming from the 1760 router... I am thinking that I could setup my lab for Voice with minimal alterations... This is what my lab looks like now.. the [brackets] are the items that I am looking at purchasing...

Juniper NS-5GT Wireless Security Appliance
|
|
Cisco AP350
|
Cisco 3640
|
Cisco 3640--------------Cisco 3640
| |
3x Cisco 2924XL-EN 3x Cisco 2950 (2x EI)

1x 2511 Access Server

Plus a bunch of other Extreme Network plus 3Com stuff and some older 26xx routers just to play with...

[2650/51XM]
[1760]
[Voice modules..VICS?]
[AP for wireless other than 350]
[IP Phones]
[3550]

And I am thinking that this setup will be more than adequate for all CCNP needs... The 3640's give me 12.4 main... I can get Enterprise or pretty much anything on a 2650XM with maxed out DRAM/Flash.... The 3550 will give me PoE and allow me to include some voice stuff but looking for recommendations here in regard to the [bracketed] items... I see the 1760 and 2950XM/2951XM referenced often in regard to less expensive voice options... Plus not sure of a good link that explains the different voice modules... Can you guys see any flaws in my selection?
