That's debatable depending on the NIC card in the host,
and the capabilities of the hub. If the hub has any
intelligence, then yes I would assume that it could.
However, it's always best to make sure both sides are
talking the same speed and duplex, otherwise bad things
(collisions) start happening. The cost of lower end
switches with 10/100 capability and (HDX/FDX/Auto-sense)
makes one question if hubs should even be used anymore.
Higher end switches (cisco 2924, 29xx) can do VLANs,
trunking, and a whole host of other things (they cost
more), but you get what you pay for.
