640-801, or 1 exam, is how the CCNA was offered since it was first introduced by Cisco about 1997 or 98.
At a Cisco Networkers convention in San Diego (a few years ago) they told us in a Cisco Network Academy session that they did the "2 exam thing" because many of the high school teachers that were teaching in the Cisco Network Academy could not pass the full CCNA exam.
There is no advantage to either - except the 1 exam is less expensive then taking 2 exams - both can be just as hard! I have known just as many students who failed one or both of the 2 exams as I do those that failed the single CCNA exam.
It is less questions - about 55 vs about 100 on the 2 exams but that really is not that big of a deal - you know it or you do not know it!
If you know your stuff - as you should if you are going to take any Cisco exam - the 1 exam is just fine.
It also seems like it would be very hard to "split" the content into 2 exams without overlap - having talked to many students that have taken both - they felt for the 2nd you had to have a good understanding of concepts from the 1st exam.
