I have been studying for the CCNA exam with the Todd Lammle 640-507 Study Guide/Simulator. However, now I find out that Cisco has come up with a newer version of the exam... CCNA 640-607, in which all the previous "Exam Questions have been retired"...so what they say...

So, do I keep studying with the 507 Study Materials, or do I have to buy a 607 Study Guide? Can I still take the 640-507 exam, or do I have to take the 640-607 exam now? Is it worth it to Buy the stuff again...and start studying All Over Again? I don't want to suddenly find out that Another Newer version is available Again after I've finished studying for the 607 exam...

I am in the same boat, I have started studying using the Sybex book for the 507 exam - I have not set a date for the exam so I will have to sit the 607.

Do I really need new study material? - how different are the exams?

I would have to say that things are always changed to make more money and if you were to ask a Cisco rep. if you needed a new book the answer from them would be "of course you do" but I do have a little tid bit to add. I to have been studying for the CCNA and I fell into the catagory of studying for the old test and now the new one is out. And I wondered the same thing. I spoke to a couple of people who recently took the new CCNA test 607 and they all studied from the Todd Lammle book and passed. So I asked if a new book should be purchased and they all said that it was not necessary the only real new thing was the hands-on. It was even mentioned that the Todd Lammle book was the best one to study from becuase it hits the minor details also and it gets high level enough to sucessfully pass the test.

You don't need to buy any new study materials. From what I have heard (from someone who has input into the Cisco online curriculum) the difference in the test is the way the questions are worded. You don't need to go out an buy new books. Just keep on learning/studying what you are now, its the same material, just phrased differently.

This means the questions are more "scenario based" to make sure you understand networking concepts in a "real world", production environment. This is to make sure those who merely do rote memorization of exam crams and such actually "know" the concepts, not just memorize data.

I used the Cisco Press book (507) and passed 640-607 with 958 last week. It was an easy exam. Good luck!!

From what I have experienced the new certification mainly differs from the old one by the interactive CLI simulations.
In one run at the exam i had 4 simulations that I had to complete, and theese were tasks like enabling RIP and adding routes, setting password on lines and enable password, changing hostnames an so forth.

We will start letting students take the exams today, and I will also have another testrun at it this friday.
The thing worth notecing is that the simulations takes a few seconds to load (from 5-20 seconds), but that this time is not counted in the overall timeschedule in the test. (If u start a simulation with 25:12 to go, the clock will start again on 25:11 when its completed. )

The passing score is still 849 as before, and the following is listed on the score report as areas of knowledge:
* Bridging and Switching
* OSI Model & Layered Communication
* Routed Protocols
* Routing Protocols
* WAN Services
* Network Management
* LAN Technologies
* Cisco & Network Basics

I also recommend Lammle's book for the CCNA. This exam is *very* focused on networking theory such as the OSI model. About 50% of the exam is actually focused on basic Cisco networking.

Hi All

I dont think you would need anything newer to clear the exams.

But be sure you have enough hands on experience on Simulators, cause the exams have simulations which you would encounter.

The simulations are much the same as one would work with Routersim or Boson Router Simulator.

Rest much of it is the same as of now, but cisco plans to remove or reduce or add certain topics from their course like, these

More topics

Switching, Basic OSPF, EIGRP, Ethernet (Fast
Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, PPPoE, Long range
Ethernet)

Less

IPX (out), Network Management & N+ (More Info),
IGRP replaced by OSPF, EIGRP

Hope you find this useful.

best of lucks.
