I don't see a problem with changing this in the CCM.
If you are looking at changing the Hostname, then this will effect the SQL and you will need to re-run the config wizard.

no config wizard won't destroy CCM. I have changed names before but don't remember the details, over a year ago.
do a backup first though - config and data
you'll need to go somewhere in CCM to change the name too once the server name has changed. can't remember where it was.
also there's a value in the registry that needs chaning. again can't remember where it was.
issue typicall is no smdr data no acd data and alarms complain it can't connect to media server.
