Hi all,

I am trying to access my router with SDM, to practice a few labs for the ccent, i think i have done everything they ask for but i just get the splash screen stating my IE version and saying java enabled, and another ie window with some text in it, but SDM never launches.

I have pasted my config of the router below, would really appreciate a few pointers.

Thanks

well, first off, I don't think you need to worry too much about SDM for CCENT. You need to know that it exists, and what it does, but for the most part they want you to know the CLI more than the SDM.

Secondly, at that splash screen, where it shows the IE version and the Java, there should be a button to run the dsm, or to run a startup wizard, or to install the dsm launcher. Attached is a pic of my ASDM on a ASA 5505, it should be similar. Just click one of the buttons to get started.

Here's a link to a screen shot:
Does this help at all?

Just one bit to add - with the ISCW and ONT exams being phased out, I think the only place you'll see SDM creep up anymore is going to be the CCNA Security curriculum.

I've also only seen it once on a production network in the last 2-3 years, so to be honest I don't see much value in it. It ties up memory, does a LOT in the background (set up archiving and watch the log entries fly just by poking around the SDM menus), and I don't think it should exist.

Having said that, I'd be very surprised to see it referenced in the ICND1 or ICND2 exams.

I am willing to bet that your version of Java isn't playing well with SDM...I can't remember what version works well with it, but most new versions don't. What version do you have?

TekkieDave---this is for a router, not an ASA. It is not similar with respect to what you have posted.

Use version 5.x of Java to do anything with Cisco. You can uninstall your current version and head over to oldversion.com and pick up the 5.x flavor...works everytime..70% of the time

Do you have SSH enabled in your browser? Just a thought.

I have jre 1.5.0_06 and SDM works fine on my laptop with XP pro.

I personally like to use SDM to modify ACL and dhcp scope where cli is a bit tedious if you have long list to test.

Thanks,

A couple of other thoughts, as I am preparing for the CCNA Security exam myself. Are you running SDM from the router or from the workstation? I found it would barely work if I ran it from the icon on the desktop, but if I point my browser to the router address, it works pretty good.

SDM can "help" you with some of the more advanced configs, and I use to create the "base" to work from. I usually take what it gives me, then load it into notepad and edit it to clean it up a little, then load it on the router. It's actually pretty good if you need to do VPN work or some firewall config, if you're using your router as a firewall.

Also, it does matter what IOS image you're using, but looks like you've got the right one there.
