Any one got any tips for this, failed twice now. The course work I can do and have done successfully.
The practice exam through measureup I get 100% on. I also have a practice exam by preplogic for the 640-802 which I am fairly good at. Is this any good for the 640-822 exam
Though I have sat the 640-822 twice now and picked up marks in some areas, I have dropped them in others, I still can't see to get past the lower end of the 700's
Please help I am close to suicide now!!!!!!

I hate to say this, but the CCENT is the easiest exam Cisco offers. Based on the exam score reports, where are your weak areas? Also, you can't just take this exam without practical hands-on knowledge. Long gone are the days of memorize and regurgitate. This site has already posted numerous times links and lots of help on specific topics. However, without specifics from you on your weak areas and your approach up to now we can't offer much help except to say, Know the material cold, inside and out!!

One tip I always give my learners...Do NOT get your EGO out of whack for missing a Cisco exam! They are difficult!

Hi Cluebird

It is hard to say where my weak areas are, as I gained marks in them this time, and lost marks in other ares.
Test 1 Test 2
Describe the operation of data networks 63% 66%
Implement a small switched network 50% 42%
Implement an IP address scheme and IP sevices 66% 40%
Imolement a small routed network 39% 71%
Select appropriate tasks for a WLAN 67% 67%
Identify security threats and mitigate them 100% 67%
Implement and verify WAN links 33% 75%

As you can see I seem to have mixed everything up, probably studied to hard on thigs I dropped in the first, leaving out what I knew. Error number one I think.

Bobbyforhire

Eror number two is the fact I am not a full time student, I hold down avery demanding jod, which is not in IT, I also have shift work to contend with. Which means staying up later and studying would put my job in jeopardy as I would be unsafe on the machine I operate.

Don't get discouraged. I hate to count the number of times I had to take the CIT exam for the CCNP. I will say this, I was less than impressed with the preplogic practice test engine. I found lots of mistakes when I tried the one for the BSCI.

I'd say from looking at your breakdown, the first 3 categories are where you need to focus. Looks like you had some good improvement if not stayed about the same for the rest.

What are you using for material? The books by Todd Lammle and Wendell Odom are probably your best resources.

reddevil2,

Looking at your scores I would say HANDS ON PRACTICE!!!!

You did not say if you have a lab - if not get one - 3 routers and 2 switches!! I would also get 2 older PCs - they can be P3s or even P2s or P1s as long as they have a NIC and setup end to end networks. You can find old PCs at garage sales, Ebay, Thrift stores etc.

Start with basics, put the 2 PCs in same switch and address them both and get them to talk to each other/ share files. Then put the routers in the mix, get the routers to talk and hang the PCs off different switches attached to different routers and again get them to share files.

What you will learn is getting routers to talk to routers (WANs) getting switches to talk to routers (LANs) and getting the PCs to share files - NETWORKING!!!! END TO END

I have listed this FREE download (MANY TIMES HERE) for a 720 page PDF CCNA lab book that starts with the basics and works up to the complex using 1-3 routers -

GET IT and work through it! To learn this stuff, you need to read it and then DO IT - put it into practice!!!!!

I hope this helps!

reddevil2,

I also agree with lerdalt - "The books by Todd Lammle and Wendell Odom are probably your best resources.

I would say these are the BEST you can buy - you need them both but as you read - you need to stop and try it on your lab to fully understand the concept!!

Hope this helps!

I echo what lerdalt and CiscoGuy33 state. Hands on with real gear. Lammle's book. CiscoPress (Odom's) library. When you can do every configuration shown in the books from memory and understand how data flows between devices such as routers, switches, and PCs you'll be in decent shape for the exam. Oh yes, did I mention subnetting? Be able to do instinctively.

There is a price to pay in learning the material...no shortcuts. You will be very proud of your accomplishment when you succeed.

I personally am a big advocate of the 31 days before the CCENT book as well as measureup.com. If you are missing after this type of studying then it is definitely the hands on that you are missing out on.

CiscoGuy's recommended lab book is awesome.. I used it myself..

The recommendation of a lab is probably your best bet. You can find a 2600XM series router for $150ish on eBay. If you go with that or a 3640 with an NM-4A/S module and a couple of 2500's (Was recommended for CCNA in several of the posts here as they are very inexpensive) then you would have a nice routing lab. Be sure to buy yourself a couple of 2950 switches as well. These will prove beneficial in you CCNP studies as will the XM/3640.

In the meantime while you are putting this all together visit and play with GNS3.. There is a useful tool called IOSHunter.. google it.. and use as a reference.. Hope this helps...

HI GUYS
I have two books by Wendell Odom CISCO INTROand the CISCO ICND, I have CISCO FLASH CARDS and EXAM PRACTICE PACK by Eric Rivard and Jim Doherty, also I have CISCO PRESS BOOKS Networking for home and Small Businesses Allan Reid and Jim Lorenz, with Working at a Small to Medium Business or ISP by again Jim Lorenz and Allan Reid, Introducing Routing and Switching in the Enterprise by Cheryl Schmidt, Jim Lorenz and Allan Reid. The EXAMPREP CCENT 640-822 by Jeremy Cioara, David Minutella and Heather Stevenson, and Scott Bennett's 31 days before your CCENT Certification. So I think I am well armed with literature.
As to the lab, on a restricted budget, trying to support three kids, wife and pay the mortgage, the Cisco routers and switches seem to be well out of my league. So unfortunately I don't have a lab, and the lab at firewall.cx has been undergoing maintenance so I haven't been able to use that one. Though I found on the old course the live lab provided by CISCO to be very beneficial, unfortunately when they changed the course they seem to have deleted that part of it. So any advice as to get HANDS ON practice would be appreciated.

If you have forsaken the possibility of an actual lab then the next best option is a Simulator or Emulator.

PROs - CONs

Simulator costs money but has no setup or learning curve. Also less realistic but differences are nominal for CCNA purposes for most similators.

Emulator is free but has learning curve and requires the acquisition of an IOS image. More realistic since you use an actual IOS.

OPTIONS:
Simulator Boson - Emulator GNS3 -
