cc:mail SMTP corruption

We have recently abandoned ccmail ver 8.2 because we could not overcome a problem with our SMTP gateway. External messages came into mimesweeper intact but when they were routed to the SMTP gateway each message header was labelled "pleased to meet you" and the recipients received a messaged "1K message unreadable". ccrestore of ccpoms, ccpods didn't work. It seems to be SMTP related only. Recipients folders then began to get wiped out with all mails converted to "message unreadable".
We have up-to-date anti virus protection but they have never heard of such a virus.
We finally did a complete restore from a few days before the problem occurred and users mailboxes are fine but we dare not switch on the SMTP gateway. ( We now use Groupwise ). Platform is Novell 5.1 with SMTP resident on an NT box. Has anyone heard of this ?

I hv n't done ccMail for more than a year now.
But the ccpoms, ccpods hv been affected from the description.

Inbound internet email should route to an updated patterned anti-virus server prior to hitting the smtp server. If you have done so, your description did not mention.

Hv you check the virus vendor sites?
