I'm trying to upgrade a supervisor module and noticing that the commands are different from the standard IOS commands. Anyone done this before? I started issuing "?" to the command line and came up with "copy tftp flash". Is that all it takes? I'm a bit concerned that I'm not telling the OS what module this upgrade is for. Help appreciated.

Yes, that IS a standard IOS command. That is all it takes. It should ask if you want to erase the image that's on there already.

I've got a SupII module and I'm trying to load cat4000-i9k91s-mz.122-25.EWA13.bin (for supporting a PoE blade). I've heard conflicting stories as to whether or not this will actually work, Cisco says no reseller tech support says yes. Is there a way I can leave the current image intact? This way, if poo hits the fan I can roll back...

Thanks.

I'd rather be lvling my shadow priest, pew pew ;)

It should ask if you want to delete the current image when you do a copy tftp flash. Just say no, and
switch(config)#boot system flash:(image name goes here)

I always keep a backup copy of the IOS and running config on my computer...run a tftp service on a comuter connected to the network, and
copy flash tftp
and enter the image name...
sh flash
will give you the full image name.

So if I go ahead with this, I won't turn the Sup into a paperweight and I'll be able to recover if I have cat4000-k8.8-4-11-GLX.bin downloaded and stored somewhere. I'm almost ready to just purchase a power injector and call it good. I suppose this is worth while to try though...helps potentially keep unforseen project costs down anyway.

Thanks man!

PS

I'm going to have to make room for the new image because I only have approx 3MB left in flash. Take a look at these, are they all necessary?

set boot system flash bootflash:cat4000-k8.8-4-11-GLX.bin
set boot system flash bootflash:cat4000-k8.8-4-11-GLX
set boot system flash bootflash:cat4000-k9.7-6-3a.bin
set boot system flash bootflash:cat4000-k8.8-4-11-GLXprepend

Possible to do some clean up?

Yes---I'd copy them to a computer first, then
switch#delete flash:(image name goes here).

You have a supII , you cannot run IOS on it. If you attempt this you will screw up the switch. A sup II is a catos box only hence why you only have catos files in bootflash: . You don't need all those files . Just find out what version catos supports the card you want to install and get that or maybe one of the current ones in bootflash supports it, 8.4.11 is one of the last ones they made for catos. You don't need all those boot statements in the config , only use one . You can get rid of all of them and just use one by using the "clear boot system all command and then just use one boot statement, "set boot system flash bootflash:<imagename> " . To find out what you have in bootflash do a "dir bootflash: . If you delete a file off bootflash you must then use the "squeeze" command to actually recover the space . What card are looking to put in and I will look to see what catos version supports it . Do not attempt to load a IOS on this box.

PS for future reference only 6500's are upgradable from catos to IOS . No catos 4000's are upgradable. You have to have at least a Sup II + card to use IOS and it comes from the factory with IOS on it.

glad i checked here again, why on earth are the dummies that sell me this stuff telling me it would work then?? so, cat4000-i9k91s-mz.122-25.EWA13.bin is not a CatOS file its an IOS file???

i think my sales rep has someone they deal with direct at Cisco too that says this will work, interesting...anyway, the PoE blade is a 4013 (i think) that has already been installed but wouldnt come up because the Sup doesn't have the right OS.

so, now im trying to delete some extra stuff out of flash and it won't let me:

Catalyst-4506 (enable) delete flash:cat4000-k9.7-6-3a.bin
Can not delete file on the device
Catalyst-4506 (enable) delete flash:cat4000-i9k91s-mz.122-25.EWA13.bin
Can not delete file on the device
Catalyst-4506 (enable)

The image you are trying to load is IOS , won't work if you truly have a Sup II which it sounds like you . The 4013 card is the supervisor . Find out the number of the port card and I will look it up . If its a POE it may not work in this chassis as I'm not sure the power supplies in these older chassis will handle POE cards . You need a supp II plus card and a 4500 chassis with the bigger power suplies to handle any POE cards . If you post the card number I'll try to look it up . To delete images the syntax is "delete bootflash:<imagename> . Then "squeeze bootflash: " , this will take a few minutes while it does this.

Looking at your original post you say it is a 4506 chassis , then its possible it could support a POE card but you still cannot put IOS on a catos supervisor , so if you can post the actual module number i'll look .

Makes sure that you have the right power supplies to support the POE modules..
