I'm trying to get our Catalyst 4006 up and running on our wan. A few months back our 3com router went down and a local company provided us with a Cisco router on lease. We run a Novell network and the router did not have the proper software to do ipx. Therefore this building has been cut off from the rest of our novell network. The fiber connecting this building to our main building was finished about three weeks ago. The guy who set up the catalyst quit and there has not been a replacement from the company lending us the router. Therefore, I am flying by the seat of my pants trying to get this thing going.

What we have:

Catalyst 4006
Service Engine: WS-X4013 (2 gb ports)
Module 2: WS-4232-L3 (2 gb ports 34 ethernet ports)
Module 3: WS-4148-RJ 48 port
Module 4: WS-4148-RJ 48 port

We only have one Gigabit port populated (the first port on the 4013), the rest are empty.

A good deal of the initial configuration was already completed by the guy who quit. My first impression was that the Gigabit port connecting us to the world was disabled (like it was on the other end). I figured if I could just re-enable this port we could get communication going.

I guess, before I get too deep, I should ask a question about the general layout. I take it the service engine is also considered a module. Therefore, speaking only of the Gigabit ports then:

port 1 is 1/1 (port 1 on the 4013)
port 2 is 1/2
port 3 is 2/1 (port 1 on the 4232)
port 4 is 2/2

The 4013 shows that port 1 (1/1) is enabled and up. The rest of the ports are down.

When I console in to the 4232 it shows that the Gigabit Port 1 is down and that port 3 is up. I have tried to take port 3 down, but it will not let me. In this instance, when consoled into the 4232, are the ports reorderd? That is:

port 1 on the 4013 is considered port 3 when consoled into the 4232
port 3 for the 4013 is considered port 1 when consoled into the 4232

Or am I missing something completely?

I'll stop here for now.

I have to wonder about the router as all one needs to do is upgrade the IOS from IP only which is what it sounds like you have to IPplus which supports the IPX. IPX is fairly easy to get going on the router.

The switch I will have to think about and report a second message.

Any VLANs on the 4000? If not then you are just using VLAN 1 which is the default and it keeps life simple(r) :) If you are VLANing, then we need to ID your trunks if used.

Have you accessed the WS-X4013 yet? you can open a session by first telneting to the switch then

#show module

look for the module WS-X4013 and get the number

then
#session [module number]
enter the password ( assuming it's set and you have it)
This drops you into the exec mode on the module. Type exit to leave the session

You need to do this for your VLAN configuration and changes.
