Is there a "standard " intelligence behind the kinds of searches offered by the likes of Amazon and thousands of other shops with regard to matching items in a catalogue with a search string entered by the user.

I need to introduce something similar and I don't want to re-invent the wheel nor come up with a markedly inferior solution so I'd appreciate some tips as to where to start.

I'm assuming that a simple LIKE comparison will never be enough but is this where FULL TEXT SEARCH comes in - something I've never used?

Since we' re in a SQL Server forum, FULL TEXT SEARCH is definitely what you' re looking for. It' s not very complicated. Some companies develop their own search mechanisms but they are not available to us. Good luck.

Thanks, I will explore further.
