Hey all,

I am using QuarkXpress 5. I am designing a 16 page 8x11.5 catalog....this is actually my first one. I just wanted to get some input back about how I am going about it. First off, I have 16 facing pages setup. I am conveting all pics to CMYK TIFF format before inserting into the Quark doc. The doc will have a dark gray background throughout the catalog....basically every page has a dark gray background (I am using the Quark box field with no content and the box goes tot he edge of the page, on each page). The items (jewelry) will be displayed in black picture box fields with a 1pt pale yellow border. I am using a TT Font (merced) to to the titles and all.

Should I extend the gray box fields over the edge of the page to make sure it prints the gray to the edge?

How can I make sure the TT Font I used will be OK when sent out for printing?

I understand that Quark show a low res version of the TIFF pics used when viewing on screen. I also noticed that during a test print at home....I could see the pictures files linked to my local folder where the files are (during the print status dialogue box). How can I make sure the pics will be linked correctly when sending the doc out for printing?

Finally, while testing a page out at home.....my printer cuts the top and the right (white space left) even when the crop marks are all the way to the page edge, print setup is set to 100% centered. Just wondering if it is because I am using a HP990 and not something more compatible for what I am doing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
RRD

First, you should extend the box over the edge of the page, as you suspected. About 3mm should be enough. It's known as 'bleed'.

It's hard to know if your font will print ok - some do and some don't. If it's possible to get a PostScript version, then use that, but if not, bring it to your printer's attention and make sure they don't run the job if it's not printing right. Providing a sample off your own printer will help.

You supply the printer with all necessary files (ie, the Quark document, the linked images, and the fonts used). Just keep all the images in the one folder and they'll be found.

I'm not sure about your printing issues... you could try turning tiling off in the print dialog box, and checking the 'Fit to Page' box. It might scale your document, but at least you'll see the whole page.
