Catalog backup file backed up with Ntbackup 1

Hi,

I was using NTBackup for backing up my Exchage server database. Now my company is planning to buy Veritas Backup Exec software for backup purpose.

But i have some older tapes backed up by NTBackup utility, I want to know that can i catalog those tapes in Veritas Backup Exec program, So that it can read the tape and be able to restore those data.

I have heard about "Foreign Media' support feature of BackupExec, In that NTBackup is not listed as a supported format.

Please Help.

It should work fine, BE can read tapes written by Ntbackup.

Just inventory and catalog the tapes.

Go and grab the eval of BE and test out for yourself.

Ok i have given for download, But before that i have one curiousity to know that:

If i catalog though NTBakcup it shows only "Information Store" and "Directory Store" and i cant restore the single mailbox, since it doesnt support brick-level restore/backup.

So if i catalog using BackupExec will it show me all the users mailbox by reading the Information store from the backup file.

No, will only show that if you back up the mailboxes at brick level.

IF you running exchange 2003 you could restore the IS to recovery group and extract out emails for restore.

Another option to looks at is Ontrack Power Controls. This is just a restore utility and you can tap into a NTBACKUP and extract out what you need from the backup. For the price you not that much more away from the price of backup exec. Backup exec would be a faster solution.

Hi,

Thanks a lot the Ontrack powercontrol is a great tool. Atleast for now when i dont have my BE in place, I could use it restored my mailbox.
