I'm running a G3 with OS 8.6. I've been having problems with my machine (like stuff dissappearing off of the desktop) so I ran Norton utilities on my machine and it found errors with the Catalog B Tree. Norton couldn't fix it. I tried to optimize my drive and got the error "Bad Extent Descriptors in B Tree". Does anyone know what this is?

Did you run Norton from the CD (as opposed to locally)? Norton can generally fix that stuff (which version do you have?) as long as it (Norton CD) IS the startup disk.

While you're at it, you may as well upgrade if possible to 9.x while still available. 8.6 was killing me, but I needed for older software. Eventualy bit the bullet and bought new stuff.

Let me know how it's going.

I did run it from the CD and the machine was booted to the cd too. I have version 4.0. I'm going to try drive setup to fix the problem.

If you're still having those errors, I'd give some of the other utilities a crack at it. I"d start with Alsoft Diskwarrior, then try techtool. If you don't want to spend the money, back up what you need, and reformat. I'd go with system 9.2 and update to 9.2.2.
Best of luck,
PT
