Would a cat6 install give any problems to enginners used toinstalling cat5e?? We have a requirement to quote on a cat6 install but have only installed cat5e upto this point.would there be much if any training required?? Thanks for any tips people........

yes CAT6 is different and may need some training it works alittle diferent than cat5 and taking classes on it wouldent hurt to tell you the difference between the 2. because if somthing happens you want to know how to fix it. If the company will pay for the training than do it, hey its free right? and alitle knolage wont hurt either, but to my knolage it is alitle diferent to install than cat5 I think the contenuation is diferent. hope that helps

I'd say since it's your first time installing Cat6, increase your labor cost by 40-60%, and after you've done a few you could drop it down. If I actually had to do bids, I would probably be down to just adding 10% or less for labor.

Other than that, it really isn't all that different. I would second the suggestion of getting some hands on training from the vendor you decide to bid. Most vendors are changing the layout on patch panels and jacks. That way you will have seen the difference before you get to the job site.

Thanks for the replys,by the sound of it someone who has installed cat5 shouldn't have too much trouble with cat6?? My main query is regard to the actual cable runs,i've heard that the cables shouldn't run next to each other-one sugestion being that the cables in any roof space should be spread out all over the place??!! The system we would use is made by pressac, the patch panels and RJ45 outlets have the same termination style as their cat5e systems,is running cat6 cables in trunking a no no then?? Can we not have cable runs next to each other (as in cat5 bundles)?? Thanks for any info.....

Yes, you can run them in a bundle, just don't 'comb' the bundle. Let the cables fall where they do. The looser the bundle the better. If you have the ability to put in cable tray (ladder or basket type) just let the cable lay in the tray without bundling it up is the best. But still try and make it neat.
