Cat5e problem and a MAC OS 9 and X

I have one MAC with the above OS's. If I run it directly to my switches with cat5e, it has a slow upload/download on our ftp and mailservers. BUT....if I connect it to a $30 linsys router then to my switch...IT WORKS FINE!!! Can some on explain this? I have run new runs to the computer and have even put it on differnt switches.

In the future everything will work...

I think it has to do with the negotiation between the switch and the computer. Ask in the ethernet forum.

The reason is that the switch (linksys) is boosting the speed of the cat5e cabling and that is why it is like that.
