Can someone tell me if it is possible to use a pair out of an existing cat5 cable (w/bl-w/or-w/gr-w/br) for voice purposes. If there is a pair available, would it affect the data transmission on that cable...Mike

I've used the unused pair of 10 base t a few times for both analog and digital phones and not seen degradation.

with that said it is better to get another cable in place for the voice since full duplex, 100 base t, and gigabyte need all pairs of a cable.

If voting could really change things, it would be illegal.

Ditto what jerryreeve said.

it can be done and most likely will work flawlessy but the recommendation would be to install an additional cable

Under normal curcumstances which pair would be the best to use?

I would concur with the previous posts, you are generally better off running a seperate cable, However the w/bl and w/Br pair are generally available, the Exception would be if you have some Wireless Cisco devices as some of them use the W/Br to give power to the device,

I would have to agree on this, BUT
Jerry, what kind of 100 base t are you using that uses all pairs?
