Hi all,
This is Nadeem from India.
My question is ---
Why CAT5 have 8 wires ( 4-pairs ) when actually only 4 wires ( 2-pairs) are used for data.
i.e 1,2,3 and 6------Used for Data
4,5,7 and 8------are not used

Can somebody help me to clarify this thing.

Thanks
Nadeem.

Please see the FAQ for this forum about cable design. One of the links goes to Paul Kirsh who authored the CAT standard. The short version is that the "extra" wires help drain and surpress noise that would interfere with the signals. This is why for CAT5, you must use ALL the pairs for the run to meet spec AND to have it work correctly over the full 100 meter length.

Thanks Mike for your fast turnaround.
But I want to ask whether I can use remaining 2 wires (i.e. 4 and 5) out of 4,5,7and 8 for transmitting voice. So that I can use to connect with RJ-11 as well as RJ-45 to transmit the voice as well as data from the same single cable.
Mike, Is the above situation possible ?

I appreciate your help.

Thanks
Nadeem.

Sure it's possible BUT.. you break the cat5 spec, you possibly introduce noise into the data circuit ( pots has 48V floating on it vs. 5vdc for the data) and generally is not a good idea as a rule.

Your milage may vary ;-)

Great Mike ! You are wonderful . I found QOS 100 %

Thanks a lot. Will get back to you if any other question arises.

Mike covered this well, but I just wanted to add that distance will make a big difference. With modern equipment you can push 100Mbit through a pretty crappy connection if it is short. The longer the run, the more likely you are to cause trouble trying to split out a pair for voice. Something to keep in mind. Jeff

If everything seems to be going well: you don't have enough information.......

What is the real difference between cat 5 and cat5e cable, can anybody explain precisely.

Actually you can "split" the cable for other purposes. As outlined in the EIA/TIA standard. The one issue is that all 8 conductors must be terminated on an 8 conductor jack. The spec says you can add baluns, spliters, amplifiers, but the must be external to the "system" which basically means as long as the 4 pair cable is run straight through, and terminated on both ends on a single jack, it meets the standard. Most manufactures of jacks make some sort of spliter to be used outside of the system. We use Siemon Company splitters at work, they come in various configurations depending on your application. You shouldn't have any problems running voice with ethernet. You will however not be able to run AS400 and ethernet together..(learned that one the hard way)..
