some questions about cabling...that 100meter rule...does that mean from workstation to panel...or station to server?

for instance:

[server]----150ft----[switch]-----250ft----[workstation]

does that work?

also lets say i've got to get to a building 500 feet from my patch panel...is there some kind of intermediary device that i can use to keep my connection going

Sure, if you connect through a switch the counting starts over.
panel>>100m>>switch>>100m>>device

If you need to make real long runs, you might be better off using fiber. Also with the 100 meter rule, dont forget that includes any patch cords.

what do you use to make that transition from catV to fiber...maybe transition is the wrong word...does that mean i would use a switch (for instance) that supports fiber and a rj-45 connections?

You could either use a switch that supports fiber ro use stand alone fiber transceivers at each end to convert from the rj45.

It depends on the tranceivers and type of fiber. You can go dozens of miles on single mode.

most multi mode fiber is 2 km at 10 and 100, but 220 meters at gigabit.

single mode can be as long as 70km if you buy the right electonics, but single mode electonics run about 10 times multimode, and go up from there.

I sometimes find it cheapest to buy a pair of switches on ebay with one fiber on each. I use one fiber port and one copper port and just ignore the other 15 copper ports, but not today

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.
