I have a load of CAT files in the arcserver\temp folder.

I have read in a different thread that these can safely be deleted.

I understand that basically they are written to the tape at the end of the backup.

Is this correct? If so is there a reason why the software doesn't delete them themselves?

For the moment I've zipped the cat files down from 1.5Gb to 200Mb to free some room up on my servers drive, however I would like to be certain that I'm a) not got copy of arcserver running incorrectly and b) that I can safely delete these files.

Any help/advice would be great.

Cheers

Deleting the files also means that the info they contain won't be inserted in the database.
You can merge them manually by using the mergecat.exe utility located in the arcserve home directory. This way you can get rid of them in your temp dir and also update the database.
Also check your logs for any signs of database corruption like failed to login database etc...

Arcserve has to manually merge the cat files to the database. Since the database has a problem its not merging the catalog files. So run the mergecat.exe in the dos prompt of the arcserve folder. Once its done you can delete the cat manually ....

Run the database utilities as per the URL given so you can keep the database intact....

Large CAT files can take a long time to merge. Before kicking off mergecat.exe manually, check task manager to make sure it is not already running. You should see CPU utilization on MERGECAT.EXE and RDS.EXE (if using VLDB).

If the merge did crash, then the next time a backup/merge is run, all CAT files in the directory will be merged in.

Finally resovled this problem by creating a new backup account and following CA guides on setting account as server admin etc etc and creating new jobs that run as this account
