Case Sensitive Searches

I'm seeing a strange problem occuring on our Windows 2000 servers. If a user on their workstation clicks search and selects the Advanced Options --> Case Sensitive and searches for a specific file on a networked drive. The search will return all variations of the file. Upper case and lower case. Also, if you do not select Case Sensitive for the search, nothing is returned.

We do not have Indexing Service turned on.

Has anyone seen or found a fix for this issue?
