cascade Change Datatype of linked field, possible?

Just a simple question, but I can't seem to find an quick answer to it...

Is it possible to change the datatype of a linked field, and have that change be reflected in the linked field as well?

or do I have to delete the link, change the 2 fields, and then relink?

You must delete the relationship, change each field separately and then recreate the relationship.

yes, I thought I had to do it the long way, but I was hopeing there was a shortcut I don't know about :-(
