Cartridge not installed when it is

My HP710 keeps saying "insert color cartridge" when it is inserted. I've cleaned the contacts twice per manual - no luck. The cartridge is old and has not been used for several years. I'm dumb and would appreciate help. Thanks

Is it possible that over the YEARS, the cartridge has solidified/hardened ?
