I came across this article today, thought it was good:

What have *you* done to ensure the first derivative of your career is positive?

Ah the differnce between 20 years of experience or 1 year of experience repeated 20 times.

Exxcellent article.

So if I understand this correctly, one way to measure our career path is to take the derivative of a function of our ability to integrate new technologies?

It adds up to me.

Good Luck

I think mine is a sawtooth waveform, too!
But it all smooths out.

Cajun, I think you should integrate that thought into the function used to differentiate us on the basis of our abilities. It would open up whole new areas under the learning curve. If this carries on someone will have to write me a helpful management book: "Your career path: from axis to axed"

wouldnt 1 year of experience 20 times be a cirle? you learn your job, you get better at it, you become bored with it, you quit (the top part of the loop), you realize you are stupid for quiting, you get depressed, you stop taking showers everyday, you realized you just burned through 5 grand in savings and then apply for a new job (the bottom of the loop)
(yea I know this could be an oval, but isnt an oval just a flatten circle?)

Bob -
I think that would be a particularly steep sawtooth waveform.

Only way to get a circle would be with a time machine (horizontal axis is increasing time).

Good articles there.

Hope I've been helpful,
