One of my customers reported that they are using a card machine to process payments and the card machine is linked to their avaya telephony system via an analogue line. My client told me that it takes more than one minute for the payment to be processed, which is very unusual. Apart from running a list trace on the extension number used by the card machine, is there anything else I should be looking at?

So it used to process faster? I was under the impression that using a modem through an analog PBX line would not be able to work at modem speed(56Kb in the US). We used to use such a set up but have long since moved all CC processing via network.

a modem is a modem, this is most likely the processing end causing the problem, to test install an analogue phone, call the telephone number and see if you get modem tone in a timely manner, if so the problem is on the other end.
