Hello, my question is, is there anyway to capture footage from a DV tape keeping the same quality as what the DV shows but not having such a large captured fil. Anytime I shoot footage and capture on premeire, the footage I have captured is always a little distorted, and the file size is massive. An example would be 25 min of footage taken from a Canon XL1, once captured I will look at the saved file and it will be around 5.5 GB. and the quality is medi-ocre. Any suggestions or setting would be greatlly appreciated.
Thanks

DV uses disk space at 13Gb/hour. If you want to edit video, get a big hard disk.

DV capture is, through FireWire, a lossless procedure that simply transfers data onto hard disk without any processing.

If you think the captured quality is mediocre, then compare computer output with what you see direct from the camera before you decide where the problem lies. Maybe you are judging screen quality on the computer inside Premiere? If so, try using your XL1 to convert FireWire out from the timeline into analogue video to connect to a TV so you can compare like with like.

Transcoding into any other compressed format will always cause some loss of quality.

Higher compression than the 5:1 of DV is available, but if quality is an issue, then maintain the original format until editing is complete and then transcode into a highly-compressed delivery format, eg WMV, QT, MPEG2 or 4, Flash video etc. These highly-compressed delivery formats are not really suitable for editing, so keep a copy of the finished video in DV format if you might want to change things later.
